What was Gillborn and Youdell’s theory?

A

Teachers were quicker to discipline black students and see their behaviour as challenging authority. This would lead to more exclusions and black pupils being placed in lower sets. The New IQism depends on teachers’ assessments of pupils’ ability are often based on ‘racialised expectations’ with them making false assumptions about students potential.

What was Wright’s Theory?

A

Their study of multi-ethnic school showed how Asian students can also be victims of labelling. Teachers assumed that these pupils had poor grasp of English so left them out of class discussions and used simplistic language when talking to them.

Asian girls were especially ignored or marginalised

What was Mary Fuller’s theory?

A

Showed how African-Caribbean girls may ignore teacher labelling or seek to disprove negative labels and work even harder. (Need to remember that labelling can also lead to anti-school subcultures)

What was Archer’s theory?

A

Proves that teachers see ethnic minority identities as lacking the identity of the favoured ‘ideal pupil’. There are 3 main identities:
- Ideal pupil identity - White, m/c, ‘masculinised identity with normal sexuality’. Student is seen as achieving in the ‘right way’ thru natural ability
- Pathologised pupil identity - Asian, ‘deserving poor’, feminised identity, either asexual or with an oppressed sexuality. Seen as a plodding conformist.
- Demonised pupil identity - Black or White w/c, hyper sexualised identity. Seen as unintelligent, peer-led, culturally deprived underachiever

What was Sewell’s theory?

A

How students adopt strategies to cope with racism. Found many teachers had a stereotype of ‘black machismo’, seeing black boys as rebellious and anti-authority. $ way pupils responded:
- Rebels - Lived up to labels, feel superior and contemptuous of white boys who they saw as effeminate
- Conformist - Keen to succeed, Avoid the stereotypes
- Retreatists - Disconnected from school and the black subcultures
- Innovators - Pro-education but Anti-school. Moved between rebel and conformists.

Sewell recognised how subcultures are influenced by external factors such as absence of father role models and Arnot adds ‘media images of ultra-tough black masculinity promoted by rap lyrics and MTV videos

What was David’s theory?

A

The national curriculum is ‘specifically British’ ignoring non-European languages, literature and music. Sees the assessment system as rigged so as to validate the superiority of white British Culture.
