Asserted that black people have a lower IQ and this is linked to low educational achievement
What was Palmer’s theory?
Material deprivation effects achievement because some ethnic minorities are more likely to be unemployed

Estimated that social class accounts for at least 50% of the difference in achievement between ethnic groups
What was Ballard’s theory?
Asian parents have high aspirations for their children educationally and were a ‘positive resource’
What was Pryce’s theory?
African-Caribbean family life as ‘turbulent’. There is a higher % of single-parent families amongst African-Caribbean families (least amongst Asian families)

Lack of black male role models in the family, media and education

In African - Caribbean families ‘creole’ or ‘patois’ may be spoken which would be seen as a form of ‘restricted’ code
What was Gillborn’s theory?
Marketisation has given schools greater scope for negative stereotyping to influence decisions about school admissions. Selection procedures can lead to ethnic segregation with ethnic minority pupils failing to get into better schools. The application process is more difficult for some less educated or non-English speaking parents to understand

Governors payed little to no attention to racial issues. Lack of ethnic minority role models in terms of the hierarchy of schools/college serve to undermine pupils’ self-esteem

Supports ‘Critical Race theory’ this theorist believes racism is an ingrained feature of society and this includes institutional racism, introducing the concept of ‘locked in inequality’
