Education creates social cohesion, role allocation, meritocracy
What is meritocracy ?
The idea that if you work hard you are rewarded i.e. getting qualifications or a promotion
What does Durkheim belive about education ?
The main function of education is to transmit socitey norms and values
What does Parsons belive about education ?
School acts as a bridge between home and work
It is the main agency of socalisation
What do marxists believe about eduation ?
They argue that the powerful groups in socitey (bourgeoisue) use the educatio system to impose their own values and belifs on the rest of socitey
- Education re-enforces that existing class system

School mirrors the workplace
It prepares students to fit into their future roles
What is the feminist view of education ?
The education system still reinforces the patriarchy

Things that are learnt in school that are not work i.e. norms and values

What is material deprivation ?
The inability or indviduals or household to afford the goods and activties that are typical in a socitey at any given point
What is evidence that education is middle class ?
- Materials like laptops are expected
- Uniform is expensive
- Curriculum= formal = high culture= sucess
What do interactinists think about education ?
They believe that students are labelled
They are interested in what goes on in the classroom when students and teachers interact-they notice how interaction may affect achivement
What is a self fufilling prophecy ?
Your behaviour is how you are labelled and how you are expected to behave

That working class students were prepared by failing at school to go into a boring repetive jobs. The boys had a laugh and prioritised their mates at school.

How do language skills impact sucess at school ?
They are important os that students can understand and make the most of resources
What do cultural factors refer to ?
They influence the feeling, attitudes, values, belifs and interactions of a population group.
How do values impact sucess at school ?
Some students may value education and trying hard, so they will work hard at school. But other students may value having fun with their friends so they will do that.
How does parebtal encouragment impact sucess at school ?
Some parents may encourage their children to study and do well. But some parents may not care about how their children do
What is a private school ?
A school that you have to pay fees to attend
What is a state school ?
A school funded by the government
What is a public school ?
When the headteachers have been invited to join the headmasters confrence, a professional associration of head teachers- these schools are also fee paying

The ideas that schools should be abolished and replaced with some kind of informal education system
- He thinks that the school day is too rigid, children are under pressure to pass exams - there is very little flexibility

Students have to be assesed to get in. They may or learning disabilities or physical disabilties

A school set up by teachers, charities, faith groups or groups of parents
What is a faith school ?
The same as state schools but their faith status may be reflected in different ways
What is a grammar school ?
They select students based on their academic ability
