Describe independent schools
A
- These schools aren’t funded by the state.
- Prior to 1870, all schools were independent. Now, only 7% of students attend these schools.
- Students pay to attend these schools, but some independent schools offer scholarships to those especially academically gifted.

- ## SATs data would be published alongside A level results, truancy, exclusion rates in hierarchical league tables for parents.
- New Right - Stats and figures to pass onto impressionable parents in order for them to select what school they want to send their child to.

Discuss Sure Start (1997) [5-10mins]
- Describe the policy
- Who benefitted from it?
- What ideology is it under, SD OR NEW RIGHT? (could be both)
A
- Provided pre-school children and their families in disadvantaged areas with a variety of support e.g play centres, home visits, help with childcare and courses.
- Benefitted mothers and children as it reported a more stimulating home environment and better physical health for children. Mothers would be able to attend work
- Social democratic- Everyone has access to it.

- Describe the policy
- Who benefitted from it?
- What ideology is it under, SD OR NEW RIGHT? (could be both)
A
- These were set up to raise motivation and attainment in deprived, low-income areas. 72 of the EAZs were given £1 million to spend in each area on whatever they prioritised to improve education e.g. homework and breakfast clubs and work related courses.
- This benefitted those in deprived areas not doing well
- Social democratic - everyone has a fair chance
