Tokugawa Leyasu-
He established the government base in Edo, he finalized the unification of Japan, he didn’t want Western exposure so he only allowed foreign ships to land at the island of Deshima.
Daimyo-
They governed the domains(provinces), they were feudal lords who were required to give allegiance to the Shogun. Divided into 3 classes.
Bakufu-
The centralized military government headed by the shogun.
Han-
The local government in each domain(Province), ruled by Daimyo.
Emperor-
The hereditary ruler of Japan.
Samurai-
Men who were hereditary warriors. Some were ruled by Daimyo.
Shogun-
Man in charge of government(Bakufu).
Farmers-
People who farmed the land.
Artisans-
People who made useful or decorative objects.
Merchants-
People who distributed goods but did not contribute directly through labor.
Outcasts-
People who had jobs related to the death of animals or humans, such as tanning hides and removing corpses.
Non-Humans-
People who survived by begging, acting, telling fortunes, and other attributes that were frowned upon.
What was the social class hierarchy?
Emperor, Shogun, Daimyo, Samurai, Farmers, Artisans, Merchants, Outcasts, Non-Humans.
How did the Samurai’s role change between the Edo and Meiji era?
In the Edo era, the Samurai held the most prestigious spot in society next to the shogun and they had the bushido and lived in castle towns.In the Meiji era, they were beerocrats, and they were equal to everyone else, and they didn’t kill anymore.

The code of behavior; told the samurai to be models of cultural, moral, and intellectual development and to set examples for duty and loyalty.

Center of the Shoguns military government. Government center.
Kyoto-
Ancient capital of Japan, hone of the imperial palace-Rich.
Osaka-
Large commercial center, center of economy-Trade capital.
What caused civil unrest?
Bad weather>bad crops>starvation. Questioned taxes and government. Many samurai were angry because the Harris Treaty was signed against the wishes of the emperor, whom them were more loyal to.

Favoring a relaxing of social traditions, favoring personal freedom.
Conservative-
Averse to rapid change;favoring the status quo.

An administrative district in Japan, somewhat like a large country.
Dajokan-
The Japanese government structure implemented during the Meiji period.
Import tariff-
The taxes on goods coming into a country, imposed to make imported goods more expensive in relation to domestic products.
