Define eczema
Chronic atopic condition caused by defects in normal continuity of skin barrier leading to inflammation of skin
Clinical features of eczema
Usually begins in infancy
Dry, red, itchy and sore patches over flexor surfaces
Pruritis
Lichenification
Pathophysiology of eczema
Tiny gaps in skin barrier provide entrance for irritants, microbes and allergens that create an immune response, resulting in inflammation and the associated symptoms
Management of eczema
Emollients 2 or more times a day
Topical steroids (1% hydrocortisone 1-2x daily)
Avoid environmental triggers
Causes of eczema exacerbation
Infection
Allergen exposure
Environment (heat, humidity)
Medication changes
Psychological stress
Idiopathic
