6
Q

what are the four developmental stages of S. scabei

A

egg, larva, nymph, adult

adult male and female mites are found on the skin surface, after copulation, the female mite will burrow into the skin, tunnel w/in the epidermis and layer her eggs in tunnel shaft

As the eggs hatch, they will release larvae and make new tunnels which causes the pruritis

16
Q

life cycle of cheyletiella

A

21 days

5 stages: egg, prelarva, first and second nymphs, adult

female hatches eggs to hair, where they hatch into 6 legged prelarvae that then mature into 8 leg nymphs and then 8 leg adults

19
Q

what stage of the chigger is parasitic?

A

6 legged larvae stage

they are found attached to the skin of the infected host, where they feed before dropping off

they DO NOT BURROW into the skin

they will inject their saliva and liquefy the host’s tissues –> causes skin irritation

20
Q

what are the four developmental stages of Trombicula (Chiggers)

A

4 stages:
egg
6 legged larva
8 legged nymph
8 legged adult

NOT ZOONOTIC

21
Q

What are the two categories of ticks?

A

hard shell ticks (Ioxididae)
soft shell ticks (Argasidae)

22
Q

Dermancentor, Rhipcephalus, Amblyomma, Ixodes

A

ticks, dog ticks, spotted tick

23
Q

poikilothermic

A

having body temp that changes w/ outside temp

24
Q

what are the four developmental stages of ticks?

A

egg
larva
nymph
adult

after copulation and incubation, the adult female tick will drop off of the host and lay her eggs in the external environment where they hatch, produce 6 legged larvae (SEED TICKS). The larvae will crawl up a blade of grass and attach itself to the first host and then feed on the host before dropping off and then molting into the 8 legged nymph. The nymph crawls up a blade of grass and attaches second host . After feeding, will then drop off and then molt into FINAL DEVELOPMENTAL stage which is the 8 legged adult stage and then crawl up a blade of grass and then jumps onto another host

25
Q

what is an example of a many host tick?

A

Otobius meginini

spinose ear tick

26
Q

what are the two main tick preventatives?

A

fipronil and selamectin

27
Q

Ctenocephalides species

A

flea

28
Q

what is the life cycle of the flea?

A

four parts: eggs are shed by female into environment, where they hatch into larvae w/in 3-4 days and feed on organic debris. Then the larva forms into the pupa which takes 3-4 weeks to mature, and then turns into the adult flea

29
Q

What can the cat flea spread?

A

Bartonella henselae
can spread this to humans via it’s fecal matter
In humans its called Cat scratch fever

30
Q

Mallophaga

A

chewing or biting lice

31
Q

anoplura

A

sucking lice

32
Q

common small animal lice species

A

trichodectes canis
trichodectis felis
linognathus setosus

33
Q

life cycle of lice

A

female lice lays up to 8 eggs per day (eggs/nit same). Takes 1 week for eggs to hatch. The nymph emerges and attaches to hair shaft and undergoes 3 molts over 7 days. Adults are the size of sesame seeds

w/o blood meal LOUSE WILL DIE

34
Q

trichodectes canis

A

chewing/biting louse in dogs

35
Q

hematopinus asini

A

sucking lice in cattle

36
Q

damalinia bovis (bovicola)

A

chewing lice in cattle

37
Q

felicola subrostratus

A

chewing or biting lice in cats

38
Q

Psoroptidae

A

reside on skin surface or in ear canal

39
Q

what is the life cycle of psoroptidae?

A

egg
larva
protonymph
deutonymph
adult

40
