ECT is when a small electrical current is passed through the brain to induce a therapeutic tonic-clonic fit
What are the benefits of bilateral electrode ECT?

More cognitive side effects
What are the indications for ECT?
Severe depression
Uncontrolled mania
Catatonia
In some countries (not UK): schizophrenia
Give examples of some contraindications of ECT
Raised ICP Cerebral aneurysm History of cerebral haemorrhage Cochlear implants Pheochromocytoma MI within 3 months DVT Unstable angina Unstable fractures Acute respiratory infection K+ imbalance
Give potential side effects of ECT
Anaesthetic –> MI, arrhythmias, aspiration pneumonia, prolonged apnoea, malignant hyperthermia, muscle aches, death
ECT Procedure –> confusion, headache, status epilepticus, stroke, arrhythmias, bleeding from ulcers, PE, broken teeth, memory loss
