Ecosystems/Tropical rainforests Flashcards
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is a natural environment and includes the flora (plants) and fauna
(animals) that live and interact within that environment.
What effect does a climate have on an ecosystem?
the temperature and amount of rainfall are very important in determining which
species can survive in the ecosystem
What effect does the soil have on an ecosystem?
The soil type is important as this provides nutrients that will support different plants
How does amount of water effect an ecosystem
The amount of water available in an ecosystem will determine what plants and animals can be supported
Over how many mm of rainfall do TRF’s have per year?
Over 2000mm
What is the average temperature in a TRF?
28’C
What temp do TRF’s never fall below?
20’C
What temp do TRF’s rarely exceed?
35’C
What is the atmosphere like in a TRF?
Humid
Hot
How consistent is the climate of a TRF?
No seasons, consistent all year round
How fertile is the soil?
Most of the soil isn’t very fertile
Why is most of the soil not very fertile?
Due to the high temperature the fallen leaves decompose very quickly, but since there is consistent rainfall, nutrients are washed away. Leaving only a thin layer of fertile soil on the top.
What conditions does the climate in a TRF provide? How does this affect plant growth?
The warm and very wet climate provides perfect conditions for plant growth.
What are Lianas?
these are woody vines that have roots in the ground but climb up the trees to reach the sunlight. Their leaves and flowers grow in the canopy.
Where does the leaves and flowers of lianas grow?
Their leaves and flowers grow in the canopy.
How have tree trunks adapted in TRF’s?
tall and thin to allow trees to reach the sunlight. The bark on these trees is smooth to allow water to flow down to the roots easily.
Why do leaves in TRF’s have drip tip?
This allows water to run off the leaves quickly without damaging or breaking them
What are Buttress roots?
large roots have ridges which create a large surface area that help to support large trees.
What are Epiphytes?
these are plants which live on the branches of trees high up in the canopy. They get their nutrients from the air and water, not from the soil
What adaptations does a sloth have?
-Slow so hard to spot
-Camouflage
How are spider monkeys adapted?
Long strong limbs to help it climb trees
How is a flying frog adapted?
Fully webbed hands and feet, and a flap of loose skin that stretches between its limbs, which allows it to glide from plant to plant.
How are Toucans adapted?
has a long, large bill to allow it to reach and cut fruit from branches that are too weak to support its weight.
