Coastal management Flashcards
What are the advantages of each replenishment?
Relatively cheap, easy to maintain, blends in with existing beach, increased tourist potential by creating a bigger beach
What are the disadvantages of beach replenishment?
Needs consistent maintenance unless structures are built to retain beach
What is Dune fencing?
Marram grass planted to stabilise dunes with their root system, fences used to keep people off newly planted areas
What are the advantages of dune fencing?
Maintains a natural coastal environment, improves or keeps wildlife consistent, relatively cheap (200-2000/100m)
what are the disadvantages of dune fencing?
Time consuming, people don’t always respond well, can be damaged during storms
What is managed retreat?
Allowing natural processes like flooding or the erosion of an area of relatively low value land, it doesn’t intervene the way hard engineering does
What are advantages of managed retreat?
1)Mors sustainable
2)An increasingly popular option as sea levels rise
What are the disadvantages of managed retreat?
Land most likely belongs to someone, so money is lost as land is lost
How does a sea wall work?
Concreate/ Rock barrier placed at foot of cliffs or at top of beaches, curved face to deflect waves
Advantages of a sea wall?
Effective at stopping waves, typically has walkway for people to walk on
Disadvantages of a sea wall?
Can look unnatural and obtrusive, expensive and high maintenance costs
How do Groynes work?
Timer or rock structures built to sea from coast, trap sediment from being moved by longshore drift
Advantages of Groynes?
Creates a wider beach-popular for tourism, not too expensive, provides useful structure for fishing
Disadvantages of Groynes?
By interrupting longshore drift erosion occurs elsewhere, unnatural and unattractive
How do Gabions work?
Wire cages filled with rocks to support a cliff or act as a buffer from sea
