What was the RAD?
National labour service was set up to give men jobs in public work schemes. Helped unemployment.
How many people were unemployed in 1933?
6 million.
How many people were unemployed in 1939?
300,000.
Why did unemployment drop?
Not due to the creation of new jobs, but women and Jews were not recorded on unemployment registers. Rearmament.
What did conscription mean?
The army grew from 100,000 men in 1933 to 1,400,000 in 1939.
How much was invested in weapons?
46 billion marks.
How did this increase in weapon reduce unemployment?
Gave people jobs.
What did Hitler aim to make Germany?
Self sufficient.
What goods were introduced?
Ersatz.
Where trade unions allowed?
No.
What did Dr Robert Ley stop?
Workers couldn’t be sacked on the spot.
How could you leave your job?
You couldn’t leave without permission from the government.
What else did Ley abolish?
The right of workers to bargain for higher wages, and he made strikes illegal.
By 1939 how long were workers working a week?
60-72 hours.
By 1936 how much was the average worker earning?
35 marks a week.
