What is development?

A

When a country gets better - the quality of life is improved e.g. wealth/health/safety ect

What are some economic development indicators?

A

GDP (gross domestic product) - total value of goods and services a country produces a year

GDP per capita (also called GDP per head) - GDP divided by total population

A
Birth rate
Death rate
Infant mortality rate 
People per doctor 
Literacy rate
Access to safe water 
Calorie intake 
Human development Index (HDI) - a number that calculates life expectancy, literacy rate, education level and income per head

A

First, second and third world countries

First world - rich with lots of manufacturing and services
Second world - communist with lots of manufacturing
Third world - all other countries

What environmental factors can affect the level of development?

A

Poor climate - won’t be able to grow much if too hot/cold

Poor farming land - less crops to eat/sell

Limited water supplies

Lots of natural hazards - money has to be spent on this instead of developing

Few raw materials - won’t be able to trade

A

Poor trade links

Lots of debt

Economy based on primary products - don’t make much profit

What social factors affect development?

A

Drinking water - have to spend more time getting water than going to work, people die from dirty water

Place of women in society - if women are equal to men then they will be educated and get to go to work, which means there’s more people working

Child education - more children educated means they’ll be able to get good jobs with high wages

What types of government aid can be given for development?

A

Direct - straight to the recipient, called bilateral aid

Indirect - through an international organisation, called multilateral aid

What is short term aid used for and what are the advantages/disadvantages?

A

Emergencies e.g. natural hazards

Adv - more people are likely to survive
Disadv - doesn’t help development, aid might not get to where it’s most needed

What is long term aid and what are the advantages/disadvantages?

A

Helps country to develop e.g. improve water supplies, construct schools

Adv - helps to develop and over time the country becomes less reliant on the aid
Disadv - can take a while before the aid benefits them
