Ecology Pt. 2 Flashcards
Immigration
Organisms moving into an area (increases population)
Natality
The birth rate, increases population
Mortality
The death rate (decreases the population)
Emigration
Organisms that leave an area (decreases the population)
What does a J curve tell you? And give an example
That the population I’d growing and hasn’t hit the carrying capacity.
- the human population
What does the S curve they’ll you about the population?
When a population has hit it’s carrying capacity and levels out
Carrying capacity
How many organisms an area can support
Limiting factors
The amount if resources that limit the population, or growth, of an organism
Population density
The amount if organisms in a given area
Symbiosis
The relationship between two organisms
Mutualism
A relationship between two organisms, where both if them benefit
Commensalism
A relationship between two organisms, where one organism benefits and the other is neutral
Parasitism
A relationship between two organisms, where one entities and the other is harmed
Predator/ prey
A relationship where one organism eats the other
Competition
Where organisms compete for the same resources
