ecology lec 3 Flashcards
sustainability
using resources in the environment such that they can replenish themselves naturally, not overwhelming the capacity of the environment to cleanse and renew itself by natural processes
natural capital
natural resources and natural services that support life on earth and our world’s economies.
ecosystem services
natural processes or services that support life on earth & essential to quality of human life and functioning world’s econmies
intercrop
a sustainable farming technique where 2 or 3 crops are grown together in the same field (usually alternating rows of 2 different crops). helps with soil erosion & mask smell
crop rotation
rotating 2 or more crops on a particular field (so the same crop is not grown repeatedly) this helps to prevent soil depletion [taking minerals out] but also soil erosion
legumes
plants in the pea family (peas, beans)these plants have nitrogen-fixing bacteria in their roots and help replenish nitrogen in the soil
border crop
a row of non-food plants (flowers or native bushes) that line the edge of fields meant to attract beneficial organisms (insects, bats, birds that will eat pest insects on the farm)
cover crop
planting a non-food crop in a field to help replenish the soil nutrients usually involves a non-food legume or other plant with nitrogen-fixing bacteria
Envionement Impact (EI)
People X A.ffluence or AVG resource use X T.echnology Impact. T = (T = the harmful and beneficial impacts of the technologies involved in consumption)
ecological footprint
measure of how much of earth is needed to produce energy and breakdown the pollution from 1 person [[WWF: measure of people natural resource consumption]]
ecological footprint
amount of biologically productive land and water needed to supply a population with the renewable resources it uses and to absorb or dispose of the wastes from such resource use. Measure of AVG ENV impact of population in differen countries and areas. See per capita ecological footprint
pollution sources
indusrial, urban, commercial agriculture
polluion impacts
health, enviroment, animals, plants
affluenza
describes the unsustainable addiction to overconsumption and materialism exhibited in the lifestyles of affluent consumers in the US
