Ecology Flashcards
Biomass
Total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level
Limiting nutrient
An ecosystem is limited by a single nutrient that is scarce or cycles very slowly
Biotic Factor
Biological influence on organisms within an ecosystem
Abiotic Factor
Physical or nonliving factors that shape ecosystems
Niche
Full range of physical and biological conditions in which an organism lives and the way in which the organism uses those conditions
Symbiosis
Any relationship in which two species live closely together
Mutualism
Both species benefit from the relationship
Commensalism
One member of the association benefits and the other is neither helped or harmed
Primary Succession
Succession that occurs on surfaces where no soil exists
Secondary Successions
Restoring the ecosystem after disturbance
Ecological Succession
Series of predictable changes that occurs in a community overtime
Primary Productivity
The rate at which organic matter is created by producers
Denitrification
Other soil bacteria convert nitrates into nitrogen gas
Food web
Network of complex interactions
Food chain
Energy stored by producers can be passed through an ecosystem
