Ecology (2nd Year) Flashcards
Define Ecology
It is the study of how living things interact with each other and their environment
Define Habitat
A habitat is the area where a plant or animal lives
Define Producer and Consumer
-A Producer is an organism that makes their own food by photosynthesis
-A Consumer is animals that get their food by eating plant or other animals
Define Omnivore, Herbivore and Carnivore
(examples included for each one)
Herbivore- Eats plants only
e.g. Cows
Omnivore- Eats plant and animals
e.g. Humans
Carnivore- Eats animals only
e.g. Snakes
Define Adaptation
Adaptation is a struction or behavior that helps an organism to survive in its habitat or within its community
Define Competition
Competition is the fight for resources
e.g.
Animals - Food, territory, water and mate
Plants - Light, space, water and minerals
Define Interdependence
The way that living organisms rely on each other for survival is called interdependence
e.g. Big bird depends on frog for food, frog depends on flies for food, flies depend on something then dies 24 hours later…
List how to use a sweeping net, pooter, pitfall trap and beating tray
Sweeping net - The net is used to collect flying insects mainly
e.g. Butterfly
Pooter - A pooter is used to catch small insects. It is a jar with two tubes attached to it. You suck from one end while the opposite tube sucks up the insect trapping it in the jar
e.g. spider
Pitfall Trap - It is a jar in the hole with a flat stone on top to not allow most water if rain to get in. Catches any creature that falls into the jar
Beating Stick - It is a stick and a tray. Hit tree with stick and bug go wee into tray where you see small insects you probably didn’t know is in there
What is a Quadrat
Quadrat - It is mainly a metal square that estimates a random part of land’s amount of plants
e.g. Dandelion, grass, clover
LIst how to measure the frequency of plants in an area
no too tired
