Physical World (1st Year) Flashcards
What is length?
Length is the straight line distance between two points
Name 3 or more ways it can be measured
Millimeters (mm)
Centimeters (cm)
Meters (m)
Kilometers (km)
What is an Opisometer used for?
Opisometer is used to measure the length of curved lines on a page
What is the Trundle Wheel?
Trundle Wheel is used to measure long lengths
e.g. A football-pitch
What and how do we find area?
- Area is the space that takes of the surface
-A = L x w
What is the Vernier Caliper?
It is an object that measures the diameter of a cylinder
Diameter - the width of the circular object (most times)
What is Diameter?
A straight line passing from side-to-side through the Centre of the shape
What instrument is used to measure temperature?
The Thermometer
What units is used for the thermometer?
Degrees and Celcius
℃
What is the formula to finding the volume of a regular shape?
Length x Width x Height = Volume²
How do you find the volume of an irregular shape? Write step by step in the technique used
- Fill up the overflow can with water until no more spills out the nozzle
- Carefully place the object into the overflow can
- Catch the displaced water in a graduated cylinder
- This is the volume of the irregular object
When filling up a beaker, what is the name and where do you read the line of the liquid amount?
The dip in the beaker when with liquid is called the meniscus,
always read from the bottom of the meniscus
Define Mass
The amount of matter in a particular object/particle
