Cells (1st Year) Flashcards
Define Cell Wall
Cell walls are made of cellulose
Cellulose is a strong substance that supports and protects plant cells
(found in plant cells)
Define Chloroplast
Chloroplast are the organelles in plants that contain the green chemicals called chlorophyl photosynthesis
(found in plant cells)
Define Photosynthesis
The way green plants make their own food from sunlight
Define valcuole
A vacuole is a space within the cytoplasm where the cell can store food (liquid form)
(found in plant cells)
Define ribosome
Creates protein
(found in plant and animal cells)
Define mitochondria
provides the cell with energy
(found in plant and animal cells)
Define cytoplasm
the liquid of the cell
(found in plant and animal cells)
Define cell membrane
controls what can and cannot enter
(found in plant and animal cells)
Define nucleus
controls the cell because it has the DNA
(found in plant and animal cells)
Define tissue
A group of cells working together to carry out the same function
Define Organs
A group of tissues working together to carry out the same function
Define Systems
A group of organs working together to carry out the same function
Define Organism
A group of systems working together to carry out the same function
What does ‘MR GERRN’ stand for?
Movement - animals move when they run/walk/swim/fly plants move much slower when they grow
Respond/Reaction - growth means the organism (living thing) get’s bigger
Growth - growth means the organism (living things) get’s bigger
Excretion - excretion is the removal of waste matter from the body
animals excrete waste products such as salt, water and carbon dioxide
Respiration - respiration is the release of energy from food
living things break down food in their cells to supply them with energy
Reproduction - reproduction is needed to prevent each type type of living thing from dying out
Nutrition - nutrition is the way an organism gets it’s food
animals get their food by eating plants or animals
plants make their own food by photosynthesis
Animals are divided into 2 categories, what are the two names
Vertebrates - animals that have a backbone
Invertebrates - animals that don’t have backbone
