Ecological Relationships Flashcards
commensalism
a relationship between two organisms when one benefits and one is neither harmed or benefitted
mutualism
both organisms benefit from each other
parasitism
one organism benefits and one is harmed (non necessarily killed)
competition
both organisms do not benefit. ecological niche: an organisms’ role in an environment. Two different species cannot occupy the same niche because of limited resources.
predation
one organism benefits and the other is killed (for food).
hierarchical organization of the earth
- biosphere
- biomes
- ecosystems
- communities
- populations
- species
communities
different species living in the same area
populations
the same species living in the same area
species
an individual
biome
a large geographical area of distinctive plant and animal groups, which are adapted to that particular environment
ecosystem
a community of living organisms interacting with their environment
how much of available biomass is transferred through each trophic level?
10%
