E.coli Flashcards
Most common cause of?
Community UTI
What does it cause in neonates?
Septicaemia, meningitis
What sepsis can it cause?
Gut-related
-post operative, GIT leak/translocation
-biliary
Is it part of normal flora?
Yes, most strains don’t possess virulence factors
What is the virulence factor for UTI?
Uropathogenic E.coli (UPEC) virulence factors include adhesion factors
How does UTI occur?
- Poor drainage
-Urethral valves, congenital UG abnormalities
-Stones, prostate, cystoceles, tumours, catheters - Sexually active women
-Short urethra, traumatised
How does biliary occur?
Stones, tumour, other biliary obstruction which stops normal flow of bile
What are the 2 types of E.coli?
- Enterohaemorrhagic: EHEC/VTEC/STEC
- Enterotoxigenic: ETEC
What does ETEC most commonly cause? And what is it called?
Commonest bacterial cause of diarrhoea
-20-40% of travellers diarrhoea
What does ETEC cause in infants?
Gastroenteritis, severe dehydration, death
How to treat ETEC causing diarrhoea?
Oral rehydration solution (ORS)
Ciprofloxacin
What does EHEC/VTEC/STEC contain? Where is it found?
Shiga toxin gene
Zoonotic, foodborne
What is the Shiga toxin gene called?
O157:h7
What does EHEC/VTEC/STEC cause?
GIT symptoms
Diarrhoea (often blood-stained), abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting
What happens when Shiga toxin of EHEC/VTEC/STEC is absorbed?
Haemolytic Uraemia Syndrome which may lead to renal failure and death
