Fastidious gram negative

How does it come about?
A
Disturbance of normal bacterial flora (lactic acid producing Lactobacillus) in vaginal canal replaced by high concentrations of anaerobes (Gardnerella vaginalis, Prevotella spp, Mobiluncus spp and others)

What kind of birth outcomes is it associated?
A
Adverse
- gynecologic sequelae, increased risk of HIV and STI acquisition

What are the symptoms?
A
- Thin vaginal discharge with strong fish-like odour
- Vaginal itching
- Psychological disturbance

What are the risk factors?
A
Douching, multiple or new sex partners
Not an STI though

How to diagnose?
A
Amsel criteria (thin vaginal discharge with pH>4.5, amine smell from KOH whiff test, clue cells)
Nugent criteria
