Teaching approach to diversity that visits “other” people’s way of life/ways that differ from the dominant culture
- stereotypical
- commercial
Holiday Pitfalls
- Focusing on one cultural group can marginalize children who don’t share the same culture
- Can give children a false message that only those that are celebrated are considered “normal” and therefore right for everyone
- Primary way to introduce cultural diversity (“canned curriculum”)
ABE and Holidays
Holidays are ONE way to explore diversity
Difference between learning and celebrating
Holidays are not universal
Every tradition deserves respect
Each family has its own unique version
Commercialized holidays are not always neutral
Develop a Holiday Policy
Have goals for children Staff on same page Consider how to work with diverse families and those who do not wish to have their child participate Age-appropriateness Be true to the holiday meaning
How to respond to concerns
Acknowledge feelings
Attempt to identify specifics/break down issue into parts
Consider future planning and facilitation after something comes up
Be sensitive to the comfort level of others
