Process v. Product
Process - the way a child goes about being creative (thoughts, actions, feelings toward the activity)
Product - the actual product of the act
4 Benefits of process curriculum
Encourages questioning how and why things are used
Encourages exploring new way of doing things without fear of judgement
Allows children to work within their individual skill levels
Relies on the child’s interests and motivations
Improves children’s self esteem in their own abilities and deemphasizes having to seek approval from outside sources
Language development
Acceptance of the individual
Emotional developemnet - work through them
4 concerns of product focused curriculum
Children will be encouraged to compete with one another
Children will be force to conform within approved standards
Children will seek approval from outside sources instead of focusing on their own judgement of their creativity
Children will not be willing to question the world around them for fear of being judged
Predictable conversations limits language development

3 Ingredients of creativity
- Domain skills - skills needed to preform the act
- Creative thinking and working skills - Dedication to the work, ability to concentrate, persistence, willingness to work hard (work skills); Thinking broadly, understanding complexities, suspending judgement, breaking out of “scripts”
- Intrinsic motivations - inborn or environmentally-influenced
Benefits of Imaginative Play
Develop social skills (taking turns, patience, cooperation, negotiation, nonviolent resolution, teamwork)
Language development
Emotional develop (right and wrong, respect for others, self-control, stress management, identifying feelings, wants, and needs)

3 principles of Open-ended materials
- Children extend their understandings through multiple, hands-on experiences with diverse materials
- Children’s play with peers supports learning and a growing sense of competence (perspectives, ideas, methods, etc)
- Children learn best in open-ended explorations when teachers help the make connections
Benefits of Science Curriculum
Develops an appreciation for the natural world
Encourages children to explore, discuss, experiment, evaluate
Content knowledge
Way to test their understanding of the world
4 ways I have been affected by this course
- Helped me define what my role was (dog ex.)
- Gave me a deeper understanding of how our actions can affect children (product ex.)
- Helped me to understand how to properly manage my expectations of children
- Gave me a new appreciation for art
- Switched my thinking from what I imagine for children to focusing on the child’s desires
