both occur at least twice/wk for 3 months
types of bulimia nervosa
purging: vomit, laxatives, enemas, diuretics
nonpurging: fasting, over exercising
bulimia nervosa assessment
medically stabilize!! (f/e, cardiac)
look at electrolytes, BS, thyroid, CBC, ECG
wt is usually at or slightly below normal
inspect parotid glands, dental erosion
hx of poor impulse control, chaotic relationships
nursing dx for bulimia nervosa
problems resulting from purging are 1st priority
interventions for bulimia nervosa
monitor physical explore thoughts educate about fasting and binge-purge cycle monitor during and after meals SSRI (fluoxetine) CBT
anorexia nervosa
intense fear of gaining weight
preoccupation with food
views self as fat even if emaciated
peculiar handling of food
types of anorexia nervosa
restricting: during current episode, hasn’t binged or purged
binge eating/purging: regularly engaged in binge eating or purging
