Eating Disorders
- Term used to describe disturbances in eating habits
Reasons for eating disorders
- Often be used as a coping mechanism for underlying emotions or issues.
- Gives a sense of control
- Powerful societal pressures to conform to an “ideal” body size/shape
Characteristics of people with eating disorders
- A history of dieting.
- Low self esteem.
- Thinness is seen as a solution
- Weight gain is feared.
Anorexia Nervosa
- Restriction of food intake.
- An Intense fear of putting on weight.
- Preoccupation with body weight, size and shape.
Signs & Symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa
- Over-activity and excessive exercising.
- Lowself-esteem.
- Irritability and mood swings.
- Rigid, limited diet.
- Frequent weighing.
Health Consequences of Anorexia
- Dehydration which can leadto a risk of kidney failure.
- Muscle weakness andatrophy.
- Tiredness and overall weakness which can lead to a risk of fainting.
Bulimia Nervosa
- Binge eating and compensatory behaviour occur at least twice a week for three months.
- Rapid consumptionof a large amount of food in a discrete period of time
Bulimia Nervosa Characteristics
- Preoccupation with body weight, shape and size.
- Hormonal disturbance including irregular menstruation
Health Consequences of Bulimia
Nervosa
- Frequent vomiting and the use of laxatives lead to dehydration and to the depletion of electrolytes (body salts).
- Affects the body’s ability to function properly
- Depression and high levels of anxiety
Binge Eating Disorder
- Compulsive overeating.
- No purging but may be sporadic fasts or repeated dieting.
- Weight can vary from normal to significantly overweight.
Characteristics of Binge Eating
- Eating is out of control
- Eats more quickly than usual
- Eating until uncomfortably full
Binge Eating Health consequences
- Stress on the digestive processes and metabolism.
- Digestive problems suchas bloating, stomach cramps, constipation or diarrhoea.
Exercise Bulimia
- Compulsive or obsessive exercise used as a means of purging calories.
- Weight may not necessarily be very low as body compensates by slowing down metabolism
Characteristics of Exercise Bulimia
- Working out for hours every day
- Not taking rest days
- Working out even wheninjured or unwell
Treatment of Eating Disorders
1) GP:
Will monitor medical aspects and make referrals for other aspects of treatment
2) Counselling or Psychotherapy:
aims to address the underlying psychological factors
3) Nutritional counselling:
Aims to educate and enable the person to make necessary nutritional choices
