Asthma
- Inflammation of the lungs that causes airways to narrow, making it difficult to breathe
- Can occur due to an allergy, anxiety or exercise
Asthma Emergency Plan
- Take two puffs of reliever inhaler (usually blue) immediately
- Sit upright and stay calm
- Take slow steady breaths
- If there is no improvement take one puff of reliever inhaler every minute
- Can take up to 10 puffs in ten minutes.
- Call 999 or 112 if symptoms do not improve
Disability
The loss or reduction of functional ability and/or activity
Physical Disability
Any physiological abnormality that results in a restriction or ability to carry out tasks and activities
Congenital
Present at birth
Cerebral Palsy
Affects muscle tone, movement, and motor skills
Spina Bifida
Incomplete closing of the backbone and membranes around the spinal cord
Acquired
As the result of a spinal cord injury or stroke
Sensory Disability
A loss or reduction hearing or visual senses
Intellectual Disability
An individual experiences a greater than average difficulty in learning
Communicating with people with disabilities
- Treat the same as every other gym/class member
- Avoid saying ‘disabled person’
- It is ok to use everyday terms like ‘walk’, ‘see’, ‘listen’ even if the person is a wheelchair user or has a visual/hearing impairment
- Find out from the person what they want to achieve
Interacting with person with visual impairment
- Do not assume they can see nothing.
- Do not grab the person to guide them
- Give very clear instructions.
- Anticipate obstacles and remove them.
- Do not pet guide dogs
- Provide a well lit environment
Interacting with person with hearing impairment
- Do not assume they are completely deaf.
- Face them directly and ask how they like to communicate.
- Establish if they can lip read
- Speak slowly. Do not shout.
- Do not chew gum or hide your mouth.
- If you don’t understand their speech , don’t pretend to.
Interacting with a person with an intellectual disability
- If the person is an adult treat them as such.
- Speak directly to them even if they have an assistant.
- Use simple, clear language
- Be prepared to repeat instructions.
- Use demonstrations as much as possible (repeat demos)
Adaptation
Modifying or adjusting to allow for participation in an activity based on individual needs.
