earthquakes & PB’s Flashcards
What is a conservative plate boundary?
Where two plates don’t directly collide, but they slide past eachother along a fault (weakness)
What is a constructive plate boundary?
Where two plates move apart, resulting in a gap for magma to rise up through
What is a destructive plate boundary?
Where a dense oceanic plate descends below a less dense continental plate
What is an earthquake?
A sudden violent shaking of the ground, as a result of movement of trapped pressure within the earths crust
Where does the earthquake originate?
The Focus
What is the surface directly above the focus?
The Epicentre
What are shockwaves?
Seismic waves generated by an earthquake that passes through the earths crust
What is a richter scale used for?
To measure the strength and intensity of the shock wave produced by an earthquake.
What is used to record an earthquake?
A seismometer
