earth Flashcards
What is the crust?
Made of purely solid rock, some is oceanic, averages 5km thick and some is continental, averaging around 35km thick
What is the mantle?
Made of liquid solid rock (magma), temperatures reach up to 4000 degrees, extends roughly 2900km into the planet
What is the outer core?
Made of liquid metal (iron/nickel), temperature reaches up to 6000 degrees on average, maximum depth is 5200km
What is the process of convection?
Less dense heat rises from the mantle, cools down and falls to be reheated
What is global atmospheric circulation?
The worldwide system of winds that travel from the equator to the poles
How does the air in the atmosphere move?
Differences in temperature at the equator (warmest) and the poles (coldest), due to convection overall
What is convection?
Air moving from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
