Reduced transmission of sound waves due to an abnormality of the outer or middle ear
Common Causes of Conductive hearing impairment
Impacted earwax Foreign body Infection Barotrauma (Scuba diving/Flying) Injury to tympanic membrane Otosclerosis (Abnormal bone growth in the Ossicles).
Sensorineural hearing impairment
Disorder of the nerves of the inner ear or the central nervous system e.g. the cochlea, the vestibulocochlear nerve or the auditory area of the cerebrum
Common causes of Sensorineural hearing impairment
Presbycusis (Normal hearing loss due to ageing)
Long term exposure to excessive noise
Congenital disorders
Meniere’s disease (Inner ear condition causing vertigo, hearing loss and tinnitus)
Ototoxic drugs (drugs that can cause hearing loss, i.e. chemotherapy, diuretics)
Systemic infections such as mumps, herpes, meningitis, syphilis.
Common conditions of the ear nose and throat
Infections
Excessive ear wax
Hearing Loss
Nose Bleeds (Epistaxis)
Sinusitis
Sore Throat.
Common drugs used for ears
Paracetamol 1g
Ibuprofen 400mg
Aspirin 300mg
Olive Oil drops.
