E2 Mycology Flashcards
What type of cells are fungi?
Eukaryotes! like animals & plants
not prokaryotes like bacteria
What are some properties of fungi?
- Cell walls
2. Some sexual others asexual
How can fungi grow?
- Single celled yeasts
2. Multicellular colonies
What are molds?
Have hyphae
= multicellular filaments
What are yeasts?
Single cells
Bidding = one cell is smaller
Fission = cells are same size
What are pseudohyphae?
Elongated yeast cells
From incomplete budding
What is a hypha?
Tubular structure of mold
What is a mycelium?
Complex of hyphae
What are the two forms of fungal cells?
- Yeast
2. Hyphae
What is a septum?
Cross wall the divides hyphae
What is a coenocytic?
A hyphae without a septum
What are dimorphic fungi?
Can exist in both forms:
- Yeast
- Hyphae = mold
What are dermatophytes?
Septate fungi (hyphae)
Eat keratin
Grow in skin, hair, nails
What genre cause is ringworm?
- Microsporum = hair & skin
- Trichophyton = hair, skin & nails
- Epidermophyton = skin
What species are affected by ringworm?
ALL
What are the infectious parts of dermatophytes?
Arthrospores
= fragments of hyphae
What is M. canis?
Cause of ringworm in dogs & cats
What is Trichophyton verrucosum?
Cause of ringworm in cattle & sheep
What is Trichophyton equinum?
Most common cause of ringworm in horses
What looks similar to ringworm in sheep?
Dermatophilus congolensis
“Lumpy wool” & “Strawberry foot rot”
or mites!
What is Microsporum nanum?
Cause in ringworm in pigs
What is Microsporum gallinae?
Cause in ringworm in chickens
Why do fungi sometimes glow in Wood’s lamp?
Pteridine compounds
What is Cryptococcus?
Common cause of subcutaneous mycoses
What are some systemic mycoses?
- Blastomycosis
- Histoplasmosis
- Coccidioidomycosis
- Cryptococcosis
= dimorphic fungi
What is Blastomyces dermatitidis?
Midwest Inhalation of spores Lung infection = granulomas Bone infection Dogs & cats, HUMANS
What is Histoplasma capsulatum?
USA river valley
Bird & bat droppings
Very similar to blastomycosis
What species is most often infected with Histoplasma capsulatum?
Cats
What is the most common fungal infection in cats?
Cryptococcus
What is Coccidioides immitis?
Desert soils!
“Valley fever”
Sheep, cattle, dogs, HUMANS
What is Cryptococcus neoformans?
Pigeon droppings!
Always found in the YEAST phase!
Common in cats
Why is Cryptococcus neoformans so virulent?
Has a capsule!
Also produces melanin
What are some opportunistic mycoses?
- Aspergillus
2. Candida
What is the most common mycosis of poultry?
Aspergillus
What is Aspergillus dangerous?
Produces aflatoxins
Do NOT sniff plates!
What is Candida albicans?
Causes candidiasis
Yeast
Commensal that overgrows
“Thrush”
