What is performance management?
All actions undertaken by organizations to improve performance of employees. Ensures companies meet business objectives and gives employees insight into their performance and drive their commitment to and motivation for organization.
What is workplace inclusion?
employees should feel like they are accepted and respected within the organization.
What are performance appraisals?
formal events where managers review the employee’s performance over some period of time and discuss the result with employees.
What are the four stages of a traditional performance management cycle?
- Performance plan
- Feedback
- Mid-year evaluation
- End-of-year performance appraisal
What is a performance plan?
organizational goals are translated to individual goals for employees. Determine measurements of performance. Determined at beginning of each year

What is an end-of-year performance appraisal?
formal performance rating and discussing goal attainment and areas for improvement.
What are the three goals of goal-setting theory?
- Setting goals which are specific and challenging yet attainable can result in motivation to increase performance
- Goals regulate performance as they direct direction, intensity and duration of motivated action
- Self-efficacy and feedback can strengthen link between goal setting and performance
What are the five principles of goal-setting theory?
- Clarity
- Task complexity
- Challenge
- Commitment
- Feedback
Should employees be involved in goal-setting process?
Involve employees in goal-setting process to increase commitment to achieve the goals. Feedback makes it more likely employees will achieve their goals.
What is diversity?
Diversity is about differences between people in a group. Can be about any characteristic. Mostly used in terms of demographic differences.
What is inclusion?
state in which all employees are treated fairly, valued for who they are and included in core decision making. Should feel like they can be their authentic selves. Create feeling of belongingness and uniqueness. It is a lived experience not enforceable by law.
What are the benefits of inclusion?
- Improves financial performance
- Helps your employees’ careers
- Improves reputation as fair employer
What is a climate for inclusion?
shared perception of the employer’s policies, procedures and activities focused on creating a sense of belongingness while valuing each employee’s uniqueness.
