Q

What is Dweck’s theory?

A

The difference between people who are successful and not successful is their mindset.
People with a fixed mindset believe their abilities are in their genes and they cannot get better at anything because success is based on talent.
People with a growth mindset believe that you can improve if you put in effort. People with a fixed mindset think failure is due to lack of talent and don’t want to try harder.
People with a growth mindset think failure is an opportunity to learn.

Q

Why did Dweck’s theory have research support?

A

There is evidence that a growth mindset leads to better grades.
Dweck found that students in seventh grade taught about growth mindset had better grades than a group taught about memory.
This suggests that the approach can improve performance.

Q

Why is the fact that both mindsets involve praise a weakness?

A

Just any sort of praise may be bad.
Praising effort can lead to people doing things for approval rather than for themselves.
Therefore growth mindset can discourage the type of independent behavior it is trying to promote.
