Development Flashcards
What are piagets stages?
sensorimotor, pre operational, concrete operational, formal operational.
Sensorimotor?
0-2 years - focus of development is on relating what is seen/heard with movement.
object permanence - children over 8 months believe that an object that is not visible still exists
Pre-operational?
2-7 years - by 2 years, a toddler can walk but language is not developed.
children under age 7 cant think with consistent logic so are egocentric and lack conservation
Concrete operational?
7-11 years - at 7 years most children can conserve and show less egocentrism.
logical thinking is the key characteristic but can only be applied to physical items.
Formal operational?
11+ years - children can come to conclusions about problems presented in an abstract form. They can focus on the form of an argument and not be distracted by its content.
Piagets application in education?
Activities should be at appropriate level for age.
Sensorimotor stage - stimulating environment, sensory experiments to learn motor coordination
Pre operational - games involving role play to reduce egocentricity. Discovery learning rather than written work.
Concrete operational - should be given concrete materials to manipulate.
Formal operational - scientific experiments to develop logical thinking.
Criticism of piagets theory?
Underestimated children’s abilities - younger children show conservation and a reduction in egocentrism. Certain types of thinking develop earlier than be proposed.
Overestimated childrens abilities - he said that 11 yr olds should be capable of abstract reasoning. Other research has showed this is not true. Not all children’s thi King is advanced as he suggested.
