DVT and PE Flashcards
what does VTE stand for?
Venous thromboembolic disease?
what does distal vein thrombosis refer to?
DVT of the calves
what does proximal vein thrombosis refer to?
DVT of the popliteal or the femoral artery
what is the presentation of DVT?
painful and swollen limb with redness and heat
tenderness along the vein
‘shiny’ leg
sub acute development
what is a D- dimer?
it is a breakdown product of crossed linked fibrin
what is PESI?
pulmonary embolism severity index
what is PESI used for?
to determine the risk of someone getting a PE
What can PE do to the heart?
cause right heart strain as the pulmonary artery is under more pressure which the right heart has to pump against
what type of clots have more fibrin? venous or arterial?
venous clots have more fibrin and are more red
what is thrombolysis?
aggressive clot destruction which works best in venous disease?
what is type of treatment used in DVT? examples?
Oral Anticoagulation
eg Apixaban, Rivaroxaban and Edoxaban
what kind of treatment is used in arterial clots?
antiplatelet
what type of drug is warfarin?
anticoagulant drug (has many side effects)
how does Edoxaban work?
inhibits factor Xa and so inhibits a key protein in the coagulation cascade
