DVLA restrictions in ACS?
If successful revascularisation (and no other urgent revascularisation planned) and eGFR >40 then 7 days
If above not met then 4 weeks
Don’t need to notify unless Group 2 license
DVLA restrictions in ICD insertion (for Group 1)
Notify DLVA
1 month in prophylactic (or not associated with incapacity)
6 month in secondary prevention (associated with incapacity)
DVLA restrictions in seizures
1) First seizure (provoked or unprovoked)
2) Second or due to change in medication
Six months

DVLA notification in diabetes
Group 1- on insulin (increased renewing of licence)
Group 2- on any medication for diabetes
Guidance regarding CBG checking during driving?
In diabetics
Group 1: Within 2 hours of driving and every 2 hours of the journey
Group 2: Within 2 hours of driving and every 2 hours. CBG must be checked at least twice a day.
Guidance regarding hypoglycaemia during driving?
Pull over safely
Turn off engine
Take fast acting carbohydrate
After 45 minutes and normal CBG can resume driving.
When is severe hypoglycaemia relevant? (requires another person to treat)
Group 1: Inform DVLA if >1 severe hypoglycaemia episode whilst awake. License revoked. Can reapply after 3 months.
Group 2: Inform DVLA if 1 severe hypoglycaemic episode either awake or during sleep.
License revoked and can reapply after 12 months providing full hypoglycaemia awareness.
When should you inform the DVLA regarding ACS?
Group 2 if angina, ACS or elective PCI
DVLA guidance in group 2 license and angina/ACS/elective PCI?
Angina- no driving whilst symptomatic. Symptom free for 6 weeks.
ACS/elective PCI- no driving for 6 weeks (need to have LVEF >40% and negative exercise tolerance test to get license back).
When should you notify the DLVA in seizures
Group 1 and group 2 should notify in epilepsy, first seizure, provoked seizure and disassociative seizure.
Group 2 DVLA guidelines in Epilepsy and first seizure.
Epilepsy 10 years without medication
First seizure 5 years (can drive after if annual seizure risk <2%)
When should the DVLA be notified about syncope?
Group 1: Unexplained or CV syncope
Group 2: Unexplained, CV syncope, vasovagal or syncope with known trigger
DVLA restrictions in syncope in Group 1 and Group 2
Group 1: unexplained 6 months then reviewed
Cardiovascular 6 months then reviewed (1 month if treated)
Group 2: unexplained 12 months then reviewed
CV syncope 12 months then reviewed ( 3 month if treated)
When should the DVLA be informed in cerebrovascular disease
1) Group 1: multiple TIAs
2) Group 2: TIA/Stroke
What are the driving restrictions for Group 1 licence in multiple TIAs?
