Before sleeping

A

اللَّهُمَّ بِاسْمِكَ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا

O Allah, by your name I die and I live

(Bukhari)

  • When we sleep we should create the right environment
  • Do wudhu before going to bed
  • Do miswak - use it regularly
  • Read sleeping du’a
  • Surah Waqiah, Mulk, last 2 verses of Sarah Baqarah
  • Sleep on the right hand side
  • Sleep is the brother of death

Upon waking up

A

‎اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّهِ الّذي أَحْـيانا بَعْـدَ ما أَماتَـنا وَإليه النُّـشور

Praise be to Allah, who gave us life after having given us death and to him is our final return

Bukhari, Muslim

  • Allah gives us life in the morning - some may die in their sleep
  • We have been revived but there will be a time where we will not be
  • This reminds us of the purpose of life - to worship Allah, the most-powerful

When entering the toilet

A

اللَّهُـمَّ إِنِّيْ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ

O Allah I seek your protection from male and female demons

Bukhari, Muslim

  • We should sit + urinate
  • No impurity should be left on the clothing
  • Enter with the left foot
  • Shaytan will enter with us + look at privates if we don’t read the du’a
  • Jinns attack in the bathroom
  • We should cover the head in the bathroom: men = topi, women = hijab

After leaving the toilet

A

غُفْرَانَكَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَذْهَبَ عَنِّي الْأَذٰى وَعَافَانِي

O Allah, I seek your forgiveness, praise be to Allah Who relieved me of discomfort and granted me comfort

Ibn Majah

  • Leave with the right foot
  • Seek forgiveness as we cannot zikr in the toilet
  • Don’t waste time on the toilet - leave as soon as and use the extra time for zikr

Before beginning wudhu (ablution)

A

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِي، وَوَسِّعْ لِي فِي دَارِي، وَبَارِكْ لِي فِي رِزْقِي

O Allah, forgive me my sins, make spacious my home, and bless my sustenance

Ibnus-Sunni

Forgive me my sins = Feel true repentance
Make spacious my home = refers to the imaan + the heart
Bless my sustenance = whatever I’m given, I’m happy with. Grant us barakah.

  • We should not waste water, SAW used 750ML for wudhu, we should aim to do it properly with one mug of water
  • Wudhu washes sins + we should feel true repentance
  • We should always stay in the state of wudhu - when it is broken we should re-do it
  • The areas the wudhu has touched will be shining on the day of judgement
  • SAW will recognise us as his ummah by the way of the wudhu
  • We should be mindful of where the water goes and not be messy

After wudhu

A

‎ أَنْ لَا إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ اللّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَريـكَ لَـهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّـداً عَبْـدُهُ وَرَسُـولُـهُ

I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, Who has no partner; and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger

(Muslim, Abu Dawud)

اللّهُـمَّ اجْعَلنـي مِنَ التَّـوّابينَ وَاجْعَـلْني مِنَ المتَطَهّـرين

O Allah, make me of those who return to You often in repentance and make me of those who maintain purity

(Tirmidhi)

This is the kalimah shahadah

Whoever recites this du’a, the 8 doors of paradise will be opened for him. (Muslim, Abu Dawud)

8 doors = heaven
7 doors = hell

If after reciting this du’a you die, you will have died whilst these doors are open and the angels will take you through them

The person who dies with wudhu will enter jannah

You die as a shaheed = Martyr

  1. After adhaan
A

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ هَذِهِ الدَّعْوَةِ التَّامَّةِ، وَالصَّلَاةِ الْقَائِمَةِ، آتِ مُحَمَّدًا الْوَسِيلَةَ وَالْفَضِيلَةَ، وَابْعَثْهُ مَقَامًا مَحْمُودًا الَّذِي وَعَدْتَهُ

“O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and established salah, grant
Muhammad a place near to You, an excellence and exalted degree, and raise him to the praiseworthy station that You have promised him.”

“Whoever recites this du’a will gain the intercession of the holy Prophet a on the Day of Judgement.” (Bukhãri)

This is why we must adhere to the sunnah daily and doing durood sharif should be done daily as it makes us closer to prophet SAW

  1. When entering the masjid
A

‎اللُّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِيْ أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ

“O Alläh, open for me the doors of Your mercy.”
(Muslim, Abu Däwud)

5 sunnah of entering the masjid:
1. Enter with the right foot
2. Send durood upon SAW
3. Recite this du’a
4. Make the intention of ihtikaaf
5. Perform 2 rakaats of salah = tahayyatul masjid

A

‎اللّهُمَّ إِنِّي اَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ

“O Alläh, I ask of You Your favour.” (Muslim, Abu Dawüd)

3 sunnah of leaving the masjid:
1. leave with the left foot
2. recite the du’a
3. do durood sharif

The masjid is known as the gardens of paradise - we should value the masjid and be well-versed of the importance of it

We should look well + clean when entering

We should contemplate and not disrespect the masjid or the teachers

  1. Before eating
A

بِسْمِ اللهِ وَبَرَكَةِ اللهِ

“In the name of Alläh and with the blessing of Alläh.”

(Mustadrak Hakim)

  1. Wash hands before + after eating (we should not wipe away the water before)
  2. Recite du’a
  3. Eat with our hands
  4. Eat on the floor
  5. Drink water at the end or the beginning
  6. Recite the du’a after eating

If one eats without reciting this du’a then shaytan joins you so there is no barakah

A

الْحَمْدُ لِلْهِ الَّذِيْ أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَجَعَلَنَا مُسْلِمِيْنَ

“Praise be to Alläh Who fed us and gave us to drink and made us Muslims.”

(Abü Dāwud)

SAW said
“Allah is pleased with a person who eats some food and then praises His for it or who drinks some drink and then praises Him for it.”

  1. When forgetting to recite the du’a before eating, then upon remembering one should recite
A

بِسُمِ اللهِ اَوَّلَهُ وَأَخِرَة

“In the name of Alläh, at the beginning of it (the meal) and at the end ofit.”

(Abu Dawüd)

We should recite these duo’s loudly in a crowd to remind others to also recite it

We should eat with 3 gingers, eat all morsels, eat from the side first and then the middle

1/3rd stomach should be full, 1/3rd for water, 1/3rd for breathing

Every crumb wasted will testify against us and question why we didn’t eat when so many starve

REMEMBER:
Don’t waste
Get what you can eat
We lose barakah when we don’t say bismillah

  1. At the time of completing the fast
A

اللُّهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ اَفْطَرْتُ

“O Alläh, for You I have fasted and by what (food) You have blessed me with, have I broken it.”

  • We are fasting solely for Allah, not to show off
  • Laka = only for you
  • Laka sumtu = for you Allah, I have fasted

  1. When eating at someone’s house or after eating food by invitation
A

اللَّهُمَّ اطْعِمُ مَنْ اَطْعَمَنِيْ وَاسْقِ مَنْ سَقَانِىْ

“O Alläh, feed those who have fed me and give drink to those who have given me drink.”

(Muslim)

  • A du’a for someone who has cooked for you, fed you or given you money
  • “Feed those who have fed me”
  • We should read this aloud so they feel appreciated + acknowledge blessings

  1. After drinking milk
A

اللُّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيْهِ وَزِدْنَا مِنْهُ

“O Alläh, bless us in it and increase us by it.”

(Tirmidhi)

  • We are asking Allah to place barakah in to + give us more of it
  • Milk was chosen by SAW (from nature) instead of wine which would’ve misguided the ummah
  • We should read this du’a when eating anything containing milk; chocolate, rasmalai, etc.

  1. When drinking Zam Zam water
A

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي اَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا وَرِزْقًا وَاسِعًا
وَشِفَآءً مِّنْ كُلِّ دَآءٍ

“O Alläh, I ask of You (to give me) beneficial knowledge, ample provisions and restoration from every illness.”

(Mustadrak Hakim)

  • Zamzam is the best water on earth
  • SAW heart was cleaned with zamzam

  1. When putting on clothing
A

الْحَمُدُ لِلِّهِ الَّذِيْ كَسَانِيْ هٰذَا وَرَزَقَنِيْهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّىْ وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

“Praise be to Allah Who clothed me in this and gave it to me without any strength and ability on my part.”

Whoever recites this du’a, his past and present sins will be forgiven.”

(Abu Dăwud)

  • Allah is providing for us when we put on new clothing
  • Clothing is a provision, Allah gave it to us
  • The two purposes of clothing is 1. To cover attar, 2. To look good/adornment
  • We should recognise our blessings + give thanks to Allah

  1. When putting on NEW clothing
A

الْحَمُدُ لِلْهِ الَّذِيْ كَسَانِىْ مَا أُوَارِىْ بِهِ عَوْرَتي وَاَتَجَمَّلُ بِهِ فِي حَيَاتِى

“Praise be to Allah Who clothed me with what covers my nakedness and with that by which I adorn myself in my life.”

(Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah)

  • Ensure our clothes cover our attar
  • The purpose of clothing is to cover oneself
  • We should be clean, wear clean clothing, wear modest clothing.
    “Indeed Allah is beautiful, he loves beauty”
  • We should not wear things that will increase our pride or ignorance

The prophet SAW said

“There is nothing that is more noble in the sight of Allah than Du’a” (Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah)

Benefits of Du’a

A
  1. The best act of worship
  2. Essence of worship
  3. A sign of one’s Iman
  4. To make it is obeying Allah SWT
  5. Allah is close to the one making it
  6. It is a sign of humility
  7. It cools Allah’s anger
  8. It is a cause of being saved from hell
  9. The reward of it is guaranteed
  10. It is a cure for all diseases

Adab (etiquettes of Du’a)

  1. Abstain from unlawful food, drink, clothing
  2. Abstain from unlawful income
  3. Be sincere in what you ask for
  4. Attempt to perform a good deed before making du’a
  5. Confess to one’s sins
  6. Be in the state of wushu
  7. Face the qibla
  8. Sit in the qai’dah position
  9. Paris Allah before and after making the du’a
  10. Send durood upon SAW
  11. Use Allah’s names
  12. Recite du’as mentioned in the Hadiths
  13. Begin by first making du’a for yourself, then parents, then family, then the ummah
  14. After completing, pass hands over the face
  15. Do not ask for anything that involves sin, e.g. breaking of one’s relations
  16. Do not be impatient
  17. Make du’a with conviction
  18. Du’a should be made form the depth of the heart and with full devotion + Allah does not accept the du’a of the careless person

  2. Period between adhaan and iqamah
  3. After fardh salah
  4. After quranic recitation
  5. After completing holy Quran
  6. Whilst drinking zamzam
  7. When there is a gathering of many muslims

  9. Whenever a person sees the ka’bah
  10. In the gathering of dhikr

  3. Multazam - the area between Al-Hajarul-Aswad and the door of the Kab’ah

  5. Inside the Kab’ah
  6. At the well of zamzam
  7. On the mounts of safa and marwa
  8. In the area where the pilgrims walk between safa and marwa
  9. Behind Maqam Ibrahim
  10. In the plain of arafah

People whose du’as are accepted

A
  1. A poor person and the one who is in dire need
  2. An oppressed person even if he is a disbeliever or sinful
  3. Parents du’as for their children
  4. The du’a of a just king or ruler
  5. The du’a of a righteous person
  6. Du’a of children who are kind and obedient to their parents
  7. Du’a of a traveller
  8. The du’a of a fasting person at the time of them breaking their fast
  9. A muslims du’a for another in his or her absence
  10. The pilgrims du’a until he or she returns home

  1. When leaving the home
A

بِسْمِ اللهِِ تَوَ كَّلْتُ عَلَى اللهِ لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَةَ اِلَّا بِاللهِ

“In the name of Allah, I depend on Allah, and there is no power (to do good) nor restraint (to avoid evil)
except with Allah.”

When anyone reads this du’a, the angels say to him, “You have been guided and have been saved (from all harms).”

  1. When entering the home
A

اللَّهُمَّ اِ نِّي اَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ الْمَوْلَجِ وَخَيْرَ الْمَخْرَجِ بِسْهِ اللهِ

وَلَجْنَا وَبِسْمِ اللهِ خَرَجُنَا وَعَلَى اللهِِ رَبِّنَا تَوَكَلْنَا

“O Allah, I beseech You the blessing of entering and leaving. In Allah’s name we enter and in Allah’s name we leave and in Allah, our Lord, we trust.” (Abú Dāwud)

  1. When looking in the mirror
A

اللُّهُمَّ اَحْسَنْتَ خَلْقِى فَاَحْسِنْ خُلُقِىْ

“O Allah! You made my external appearance good, so make me good in morals (too).” (Ahmad)

  • we should work on our morals and our akhlaq
  • stop trimming eyebrows and cutting hair short as it is haram
  • stop swearing
  • we are all beautiful in the eyes of Allah
  • we must not mock appearances as appearances come from Allah and mocking would take us out of the fold of Islam
