DSA Neurophys of Emotion Flashcards

1
Q

What are the olfactory areas (para-olf) associated with in the limbic system?

A

emotion is strongly linked to olfaction (smell produces vivid memories)

Q

What part of the Thalamus is part of the Papez circuit?

A

Anterior Nucleus of the thalamus

-other Thalamic regions are involved in input and output of the limbic system

Q

What is the Hippocampus associated with?

A

the Papez circuit
-linking memory with emotion

Parahippocampal regions are correlated with surprise

Q

What part of the brain is related to the persistence of emotion lasting after an event has occurred?

A

Cingulate Cortex—- this is known as “after-discharge” where the neurons stay active
-sadness and higher level control

mostly consists of paleocortex (3 up to 6 layers)

Q

Why might someone that cannot experience emotion also not be able to recognize the emotional status of others?

A

due to the Mirror Neuron System– when you do something and you see someone else do the same thing
imitation+imitative learning

Q

What are the 2 kinds of fear?

A

Innate (unconditioned)- no exp required, can be associated with olfaction in animals
-falling and loud noises

Learned (conditioned)- watching from someone else or from prev exp

Q

What are the two paths for learned fear?

A

Direct thalamoamygdaloid path: to the LATERAL amyg nucleus—rapid responses (initial)

Indirect thalamo-cortico-amygdaloid path: to the LATERAL amyg nucleus—later responses

Lateral nucleus of the Amygdala integrates the inputs that are received—-combined with the info from basal and intercalated nuclei—sent to Central nucleus of the Amygdala

Q

What decides what responses are required (the importance of learned fear information that is presented), and then plays an important role in generating a proper physiologic response?

A

Q

What process is similar to the fear path via the amygdala?

A

Anger/rage

-large difference= requires dopamine that acts on D2 receptors

16
Q

What is STRONGLY ASSOCIATED WITH surprise?

A

Parahippocampal gyrus—detecting new or unexpected events

17
Q

What structure is key in integrating visceral, attentional, and emotional input, as well as dealing with the ‘top-down’ control of emotion?

A

Cortical control via the Anterior Cingulate Cortex

Ventral part= affective
Dorsal part= cognitive

18
Q

What are the two divisions of the Prefrontal cortex?

A

Dorsolateral: input from the motor areas (pre+supp motor cortex, and basal gang); the Cingulate cortex (performance monitoring); some cortical association areas

*Ventromedial: input from the Hippocampus, Amygdala, temporal visual association area, dorsolateral prefronal cortex

19
Q

What are the 3 main roles of cortical control for emotion?

A

Reward processing (orbitofrontal)—impulses

Integrating body signals (‘gut-feeling’)

Top-down regulation (esp with Delayed Gratification)
