DSA 4: Acid Base Physiology Flashcards
What is an acid?
Substance that donates a hydrogen ion (proton)
What is a base?
Substance that accepts a hydrogen ion (proton)
What is a strong acid?
Substance that will completely or almost completely dissociated into hydrogen ion and conjugate base
What is the normal range of arterial oxygen?
80-100 mm Hg
What is the normal range of arterial carbon dioxide?
35-45 mm Hg
What is the normal range of arterial pH?
- 35-7.45
* use 7.4 unless otherwise
What is the normal range of arterial bicarbonate?
22-26 mEq/L
*use 24 mEq/L
What is acidosis?
When pH is <7.35
What is alkalosis?
When pH is >7.45
Is bicarbonate an acid or base?
Weak base
Increased bicarbonate will ____ pH.
Increase
Decreased bicarbonate will ____ pH.
Decrease
How does bicarbonate levels change?
Kidneys: reabsorb bicarbonate
GI: secretes bicarbonate
Changes in bicarbonate are known as ____ disturbances.
Changes in bicarbonate are known as METABOLIC disturbances.
Increased carbon dioxide will lead to what?
Acidosis: Increased hydrogen production and lower pH
*more CO2 —> H2CO3- —> H+ and HCO3-
