Paracetemol - Indication and considerations
A
- Main use as antioyretic ( NO significant anti inflammatory effect)
- Caution should be taken for Inadvertent overdose
* Check for duplicate prescribing

What are the special patient groups for Paracetemol?
A
- Body weight >50kg
- Children
- Liver impairment ( or those at risk of hepatic impairment )

In what cases (patient groups) is paracetemol the preferred analgesic over NSAIDs?
A
- Elderly ( weight dependant)
- Patients with GI issues, hypertension, CVD, renal impairment ( side effects of NSAIDs)
- Patients on medications which interact with NSAIDs i.e warfarin

What is the dosage of aspirin when being used as an antiplatelet and an analgesic?
A
1**. Antiplatelet **- 75 mg – 300 mg daily (loading dose dependent on indication)
* No anti-inflammatory effect

* Analgesic – Standard oral dose: 300-900 mg every 4 – 6 hours when required
(max. 4 g per day)
* Rarely used now in inflammatory conditions–

What are the special patient groups for Aspirin?
A
- Contraindicated in children under 16 (except when specifically indicated - Kawasaki
syndrome) - Contraindicated in patients with: previous or active peptic ulcerations, bleeding
disorders, severe cardiac failure, previous hypersensitivity to aspirin or NSAID - Elderly
- Caution in patients with: asthma222
