Drugs used for treatment of GI infections and infestations Flashcards
1
Q
Cephalosporin
A
MOA: interferes with transpeptidation (bacteria cell wall synthesis) –> lysis of cell
Beta lactam antibiotic , bactericidal
can cause disulfram-like reactions (don’t drink alcohol)
2
Q
Quinolones (Ciprofloxacin)
A
MOA: blocks DNA synthesis
- inhibits bacterial topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) : no relaxation of coiled DNA —> no transcription and replication
- inhibits bacterial topoisomerase IV: no separation of replicated chromosomal DNA during cell division
bactericidal
avoid in G6PD patients
3
Q
Metronidazole
A
MOA: nitro group releases intermediate products that damage bacterial DNA
- used in anaerobic bacteria and sensitive protozoans
Bactericidal
