Drugs to Treat Glomerulonephritis Flashcards
what are 4 examples of nephritic diseases?
acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis, rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis, Berger disease, and Alport syndrome
what are two examples of both nephritic and nephrotic syndromes?
diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis, membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis
what are 5 examples of nephrotic syndromes?
focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, membranous nephropathy, minimal change disease, amyloidosis, diabetic glomerulonephropathy
what is the most common cause of acute nephritis worldwide?
post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (PSGN)
who is at most risk of getting PSGN?
children 5-12 and adults over 60
what is PSGN?
a glomerular immune complex disease induced by specific nephritogenic strains of group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus post strep throat or strep impetigo
what are the characteristic pathologic features of PSGN?
dome-shaped subepithelial deposits with electron microscopy and immunofluorescence detection of IgG and C3 in diffuse granular pattern in the mesangium and glomerular capillary walls
what are the most common clinical findings associated with PSGN?
edema, gross hematuria, and hypertension
what are the lab findings consistent with PSGN?
abnormal UA, antibodies to streptococcal antigens, and hypocomplementemia
what is the treatment for PSGN?
no specific therapy- management is supportive and is focused on treating the volume overload; no antibiotics needed
