what are antifungals?
substances which destroy the growth of multiplication of fungi
what are some fungal infections? and what is the bacteria that causes fungal infections
caused by candida albicans
denture stomatitis
oral candadosis (thrush)
Chronic erythematous candidosis
Chronic hyperplastic candidosis
Angular chelitis
what is the anti fungal Nystatin – Nystan dosage and how is it taken?
cream or topically
usually 4 lozenges per day dissolved for 7 days.
not absorbed use topically
what is the anti fungal Amphotericin/ fungilin dosage and how is it taken?
systemically
dosage 1 lozenge qid x 10-15 days
what is the anti fungal and antibacterial Miconazole and Daktarin taken and dosage?
Cream 2% apply to angle of lips 2-3 times daily for Angular Chelitis
dosage 4x daily for 7 days
what is the antifungal fluconazole/ diflucan taken and dosage?
caps or oral suspension
dosage 50mg x 1 x 7-14 days
Cautions – renal disease, children, pregnancy

Herpes simplex - cold sores most common
Varicella zoster- Chicken pox
Herpes zoster - shingles
Epstein Barr virus
Hepatitis B and C
what are some antiviral agent aciclover? dosage and how can it be taken
Aciclovir
Tablets, suspension, cream
Herpes simplex oral dose – may be 200mg x 4 but dose can be decreased/increased. (primary infection)
Herpes labialis cream – prodromal phase apply 5 day 5-10 days approx. every 4 hours (2nd infection)
Herpes zoster 800mg x 5 x 7 days(shingles)
what is used to treat herpes labialis (cold sores)
Penciclovir / vectavir
herpes labialis (topical)
what is used to treat herpes zoster (shingles)
Famciclovir / famvir
herpes zoster (systemic)
what are some problems with aspirin?
Problems with gastric bleeding and irritation
eg- aware of Haemostasis re dental treatment. Interaction with Warfarin is a special hazard
Not used for children - danger of Reye’s Syndrome (precise cause of this is unknown)
problems with paracetamol?
Problems with liver damage in overdose.
paracetamol mixed with codeine is cocodamol which is stronger pain killer
Dyhydrocodeine
Strong analgesics
what is nurofen used for?
Used for mild to moderate pain.
Anti-inflammatory.
Used for skeletal pain/post operative dental pain
