Drugs For Psychosis Flashcards
Psychosis
Loss of contact with reality
Consists of delusions, hallucinations, disorganized behavior, difficulty relating to others, and paranoia
Schizophrenia
Overactive dopaminergic system
Caused by D2 receptor issue in basal nuclei
Positive symptoms- hallucinations/delusions, disorganized thought
Negative- amotivation amd apathy etc
Comventional antipsychotics (schizo) drugs
Prochlorperazine (compazine)
Haloperidol (haldol)
Prochlorperazine (compazine) moa
D2 receptor antagonism/phenothiazine class
Most effective tx of positive symptoms
Extrapyramidal symptoms
Haloperidol (haldol) moa
D2 receptor antagonism/non-phenothiazine class
Less sedation/hypotension but higher EPS
Adverse Effects of Phenothiazine Drugs
Parkinsons like symptoms or abnormal movements/behaviors
Atypical Antipsychotics (Schizo) Drugs/Moa
(-) D2 (-) 5HT (-) alpha 1
Has fewer EPS bc of low affinity for D2
Risperdone(risperdal)
Clozapine(clozaril)
Aripiprazole(abilify)
Risperdone(risperdal) moa
(-) D2 (-) 5HT2a (-) alpah 1
Clozapine(clozaril) moa
(-) D2 and (-) 5HT2a
Aripiprazole(abilify) moa
D2 (-), varied 5HT receptor profile
