Drugs And The Endocrine System Flashcards

1
Q

In hypothyroidism what isn’t being produced ? And what effect does this have on the CNS, CV system and metabolic rate ?

A

Thyroid gland is not producing T3 and T4.
CNS- depressed

Q

Explain why an under active thyroid gland may lead to a Goitre?

A

Not enough T3 and T4- so not enough iodine, which normally inhibits thyroid releasing hormone (TRH) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) , so these keep being produced, so TSH stimulates thyroid gland to grow = formation of a Goitre

6
Q

Explain why an overactive thyroid gland may lead to a Goitre?

A

80% of cases is due to Graves’ disease- autoimmune disease- in which body makes antibodies that bind to TSH receptors, which causes thyroid to produce T3 and T4, which then causes negative feedback to stop TRH but not TSH! So thyroid keeps growing = Goitre

Q

In hyperthyroidism explain some of the situations or treatments which are available

A

Some undergo remission

Treatments don’t cure; limit iodine intake, long term - surgery or radioactive iodine- which kills cells in thyroid

Q

Which drug is used in hyperthyroidism? And how does it work ?

A

16
Q

Hypercalcaemia is dangerous, what can calcium deposits come together and form ?

A

Kidney stones - renal failure

Cardiac arrest due to over contraction

17
Q

What are the treatments for Hypercalcaemia?

And side effects ?

A

Calcitonin - decreases plasma calcium
Biphosphonates - alendronic acid - slows rate of bone growth and turnover so less Ca+ released from the bones - used to treat osteoporosis
Side effects : GI disturbances

18
Q

Name the two steroids that are produced naturally in the body ? And can we give them synthetically?

A

Mineralcorticosteroids eg aldosterone ^ sodium levels
Glucocorticoids eg cortizole ^ glucose mobilisation, ^ resistance to stress, decreased WBC
YES !

19
Q

Most steroids end in ???

A

one

20
Q

Hydrocortisone is a glucocorticoids, what is it used for ?

A

Used to treat the inflammation, during allergic reaction, also used for eczema -E45 cream
Start dose high then reduce

21
Q

Name 4 other glucocorticoids and state what they are used for !

A

Prednisolone and beclometasone -treat asthma

Methylprednisoline - used to prevent rejection in transplant patients

22
Q

Tamoxifen in a oestrogen antagonist, what is it used for ?

A

To treat breast cancer

23
Q

Thyroid disease is caused by hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism?

A

Both !
