Effects: Has effect on nerves,
Making you more alert and improving reflexes.
Risks: Can lead to high blood pressure, heart problems and paranoia.
Sports Used: Formula 1, Tennis
Narcotic-analgesics
Effect: Kills pain and allows you to keep playing through injury.
Risks: Could worsen injuries, affects body temperature and can start to rely on them.
Sports used: Sprinters before olymipcs
Diuretics
Effect: Stimulates bladder, producing large amounts of urination, leading to rapid weight loss.
Risks: They can lead to kidney issues, heart issues and make you dehydrated.
Sports Used: Boxing to stay in the weight class.
Beta Blockers
Effect: Slows down heart beat and makes your body calm.
Risks: Diarrhea, slow heart rate
Sports Used: Shooting and Archery
Peptide Hormones
Effect: Stimulates production of naturally occurring hormones, meaning your muscles get bigger and stronger.
Risks: High blood pressure, mood swings and strokes.
Sports used: Cycling and running
Anabolic Steroids:
Turns fat into muscle and also improves muscle endurance.
Risks: Can lead to heart issues, liver diseases, ‘roid rage’ and infertility.
Sports used: Weight-lifting
Blood Doping (Method)
1) Blood is drawn from the athlete a few weeks before the competition
2) Blood is frozen and stored
3) Your body regains the blood cells naturally
4) Prior to event, blood injected back into the athlete
5) Large quantity of red blood cells in blood, hence your body gets more oxygen
Blood Doping (Dangers)
1) Transmission of diseases like HIV
2) If caught, you can be banned from future events
3) Kidney damage is possible
