Drugs Flashcards
What is a drug?
any substance taken into the
body that modifies or affects chemical reactions
in the body
What do antibiotics kill?
bacteria
What do antibiotics not kill?
viruses
What effects do bacteria have on the antibodies we take if they are resistant?
the effectiveness is reduced
antibiotics might not even work
What does it mean to have resistant bacteria?
if theres a maluasage of antibiotics bacteria will become mire resistant to it as antibiotics will kill the bacteria that is not able to survive but the one’s that have resisted in various antibiotic takes will as they will reproduce and duplicate further as antibiotics kill the other non resistant bacteria
Why should antibiotics be taken with caution/only when essential?
bacteria can become resistance lowering effectiveness of antibiotics
overuse of antibiotics also kills beneficial bacteria in the gut and skin
What is MRSA
A skin infection caused by a type of bacteria that usually lives harmlessly in the skin
Explain how using antibiotics only when essential
can limit the development of resistant bacteria
such as MRSA
By using antibiotics only when essential, we can limit the exposure of bacteria to these drugs, reducing the chances of them developing resistance. This approach also helps preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics, ensuring that they remain a viable treatment option for bacterial infections, including MRSA. Limiting the development of resistant bacteria is crucial in ensuring that antibiotics remain effective in treating infections in the future.
Describe the use of antibiotics for the treatment
of bacterial infections
Antibiotics work by targeting specific parts of bacterial cells and disrupting their normal function by interfering with the bacteria’s cell wall, causing it to rupture and die. Others target the bacterial cell membrane, disrupting its function and leading to cell death.
