what is a drug
A drug is any chemical substance that affects the functioning of the body
drug dependence
this takes place when someone takes a drug for an extended period of time and needs it to function as they are addicted
types of drug dependence
physical - this occurs when the body adapts to the drug and the body cannot function without it . Person will witness withdrawal
phycological - this occurs when a person feels a constant need for the drug
types of drugs
prescription - these are legal and requires a prescription note from a medical practitioner to be dispensed. eg. Antibiotics
non prescription- some are legal and can be obtained over the counter at a pharmacy eg. paracetamol . Other NPD have age limits like alcohol and some are illegal eg , cocaine and weed
cocaine
white powdery substance highly addictive .Powerful stimulant that affects the CNS , causes increase in heart rate and blood pressure and can lead to death
LSD
powerful hallucinogen. Taken in pill form and causes a trip where colours are brighter and light seems brighter
heroin
a highly addictive narcotic obtained from opium poppy and taken by sniffing or injection. Powerful depressant of the CNS and instantly reduces stress and anxiety by slowing heart rate and breathing rate
Ecstasy
a hallucinogenic drug taken in tablet form and causes heightened perception and sexual arousal and reduced appetite
Marijuana
Also known as hard, pot ,weed , cannabis , grass and ganja , marijuana is a powerful hallucinogen which provides a high for users
Alcohol
legal drug that is a depressant of he CNS it slows down the passage of nervous impulses and is commonly misused
short/long term effects of alcohol
short - slowed reaction and reflex action
vomiting , memory lapse , lack of self control and impaired self control
long - fatty liver, memory loss , alcohol poisoning, malnutrition
social effects
addiction may lead to broken relationships
high anti social / suicide rates
drug addicts may suffer from negative effects and require rehabilitation
criminal activity
