Training requirements for pharmacists to give vaccines?
Pharmacists must be trained via an American Council on Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE) approved training program that includes at minimum:
● 12 hrs → self-study modules with case studies and assessment exam
● 8 hrs → live seminar with final exam
● Hands-on assessment of IM and SQ injection techniques appropriate for the patient’s age
Pharmacists must also be CPR certified.

- as long as the following conditions are met
- med admin is done so at the direction of a prescribing practitioner
- – rx must state “for pharmacists administration” - This is NOT the patient’s first dose
- The provider reassessed prescription
- (requirements to give vaccines) training accredited by the CDC and ACPE** and **CPR certified
- Patient must be counseled prior to admin
- Must maintain records

A standing order is required for pharmacists to have the ability to administer a single dose of emergency epinephrine
Can you refuse to fill a valid prescription?
Can you refuse to compound a valid prescription?
No…. but you are prevented from dispensing anything that is intended to circumvent the law and you are prevented from engaging in a fraudulent/deceptive act
No… except upon extenuating circumstances
If you refuse to fill a prescription, what can be done?
Once complaint sent to BOP…
BOP can schedule
1. investigational conference = informal discussion about complaint, usually held before formal)
and/or
2. adjudicatory hearing = formal hearing to determine validity of complaint (licensee receives “order to show cause” requires appearance before BOP)
what is an “order to show cause”
a pharmacist will receive this when the BOP schedules an adjudicatory hearing following a complaint they received
Licensee will receive an order to show cause that requires appearance before BOP
What are the possible results to your pharmacist license after an adjudicatory hearing or investigational conference?
Advisory letter: written document retained in the board’s files describing concerns but it is NOT formal disciplinary action
Reprimand: formal disciplinary action that goes on record
Censure: severe reprimand
Probation: disciplinary action that requires an RPh to follow the consent agreement = BOPs terms during probation period, stipulations are not reviewable, signed by BOP and RPh
Summary cease and desist: immediately stop/restrict RPh operations to protect public health, safety or welfare:
Nonbinding – BOP may rescind at any time, including at hearing
BOP has 15 days to hold hearing
Summary quarantine notice: quarantines all drugs prepared by or in possession of RPh if immediate danger to public health, safety or welfare
