DRAINAGE SYSTEMS Flashcards
Streams that get their water from overland or groundwater flow, and not from other streams
first -order stream
begins at the junction of two first order streams
A second-order stream
joint two second-order streams
third-order stream
total length of all the streams and rivers in a drainage basin divided by total area of the drainage basin
measures how well or how poorly a watershed is drained by stream channels
drainage density
- arrangement of streams in a drainage often reflecting structural control of underlying rocks
drainage pattern
- determined by random headward direction
- common on horizontally bedded seds/ massive ign/met rocks
- branching stream valleys w/o systematic arrangement
dendritic
streams follow nearly parallel direction
parallel
- nearly parallel and flow into main trunk streams at high angles
- subsequent origin and channels are etched out of weaker rock
- common on tilted sed beds
trellis
streams at right angles adjusting to a fault/joint system
rectangular
streams flow from a central area in all directions
developed on high surfaces
radial/centripetal
when streams follow a roughly circular or concentric path along a belt of weak rock, resembling a ring-like pattern
annular
