Dr. Jordan Kline Flashcards
What degrees do you have?
I received my Ph. D. in sociology from the University of Western Ontario
Where do you work?
I work at Columbus university, and my particular expertise is in hazing. I have written many articles and books on it
Why do many parents urge their children to assume leadership roles in Great Falls band?
It has excellent reputation and high achievements. It is not uncommon for the various section leaders to become connected and look out for each other later on in life
Who were the most common victims to club initiations at Great Falls?
Drum line pledges
What is “raising the flag?”
It was a hazing tradition that occurring during the 1970’s. The pledge was required to climb to the highest point on Columbus University’s campus and hang the flag.
Has any injuries occurred because of “raising the flag”?
Because of heavy drinking that preceded, it was dangerous. There are five falls that occurred because of this activity, four resulting in serious activities.
Did college campuses cracking down on hazing activities affect hazing?
Yes, as a result many of these organizations that did haze either cut down on their hazing, or in cases similar to Great Falls, became more secretive. Since 1987, there has only been 5 reported cases of hazing.
How can hazing be beneficial?
It is expected to create a stronger bond between members, similar to the military making the soldiers do practices like scrubbing floors with their toothbrushes to create bonds and trust.
Why do teenagers haze others?
Youth yearn to become a part of a collective, and try to find a “rite of passage” to become into our society. They therefore create their own systems through hazing
Where do they get their ideas for hazing?
They get a lot of it through what they see on reality television, where they see people required to perform stunts. Each year, the youth feel a requirement to step it up a notch until they cross that invisible line.
Why do they not know when to stop?
They see the adults were allowed to haze for years before them so are confused when they are demonized by the same adults. Adults are the ones to know where they are supposed to stop.
Whose fault is hazing at high school?
That is a complicated answer. The kids are the ones directly organizing this, but where were the adults during all of these dangerous activities? The adults should demand that they will not tolerate abusive initiation rituals and instead encourage positive bonding ones.
What does the suicide of Chuck’s aunt have to do with Chuck’s death?
Her suicide was very similar to Chuck’s death. She also was extremely pretty and well liked at school and became a member of Columbus University’s drum line. Two years after a fellow band member, Eugene Stifler, died, Sarah committed suicide by jumping off the ledge of a building. Chuck was the sole witness.
Why did Eugene Stifler die?
He was rumored that his death was a result of hazing by the drum line, and Sarah Conner was rumored to have been involved.
